The relationships of similarity existing among fifteen maize racial populations of native maize from the province of Jujuy (Argentina) were studied by univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate statistical methods (Discriminant Canonical Analysis, Cluster Analysis and Prim nets) on the basis of 22 quantitative traits (morphological, reproductive and phenological). The ANOVA detected highly significant differences among landraces for almost every variable. The first two canonical variates (cv) explain 75% of the overall variation. The discriminant traits associated to the first and second cv are related to ear and kernel dimensions (row number of kernel per ear and kernel width) and mainly to vegetative cycle length. These results along with the cluster analysis allowed the identification of racial groups, which are described. It also confirmed the existence of high variability in these races and from the minimum distance between OTUs a hypothetical evolutionary tree of these set of races was built. The results are discussed from the taxonomic and evolutionary point of view and in terms of their potential use in the selection of genetic material for maize breeding programs. Se estudiaron las relaciones de similitud entre 15 razas de maíz nativas de la provincia de Jujuy (Argentina), mediante métodos estadísticos univariados (ANOVA) y multivariados (Análisis Discriminante Canónico, Análisis de Agrupamiento y Red de Prim), aplicados a 22 caracteres cuantitativos (morfológicos, reproductivos y fenológicos). El ANOVA detectó diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre razas para casi todas las variables. Las dos primeras variables canónicas (vc) explican el 75 % de la variación total. Los caracteres discriminantes asociados a la primera y segunda vc están relacionados con las dimensiones de la espiga y de los granos (número de hilera de granos por espiga y espesor de los granos) y principalmente a la longitud del ciclo vegetativo. Estos resultados y el análisis de agrupamiento han permitido la identificación de grupos raciales, los cuáles son descritos. Asimismo se confirmó la existencia de una elevada variabilidad en estas razas, y a partir de las distancias mínimas entre OTUs se construyó un “árbol evolutivo” hipotético del conjunto de razas. Los resultados se discuten desde el punto de vista taxonómico y evolutivo y en cuanto a su uso potencial en la selección de material genético para programas de mejoramiento del maíz.
