Based on bibliographic information and field data, a formal description of the architectural record was made in order to characterize and compare the construction techniques used in four functionally different sites. As a result, a lexicon of construction techniques and elements was developed, applicable both to sites in the Santa María valley, and other areas of the Argentine Northwest. Likewise, differences were identified between construction techniques attributable, in some cases, to the use of different techniques over time and, in others, to different cultural choices. Similarities oriented towards a standardization of construction techniques in the Santa María valley could be established since at least the end of the Formative period.

Este trabajo aborda el problema del análisis y caracterización del registro arquitectónico de sitios arqueológicos localizados en el centro-oeste del valle de Santa María, habitados entre fines del periodo Formativo y fines del Intermedio Tardío (siglos VIII a XV dC). A partir de información bibliográfica y datos propios de campo, se realizó una descripción formal del registro arquitectónico a fin de caracterizar y comparar las técnicas de construcción empleadas en cuatro sitios funcionalmente diferentes. Como resultado se elaboró un léxico de técnicas y elementos constructivos, aplicable tanto a sitios del valle de Santa María como de otras área del Noroeste Argentino. Asimismo, se identificaron diferencias entre las técnicas constructivas, atribuibles en algunos casos, al uso de diferentes técnicas a través del tiempo y, en otros, a diversas elecciones culturales. También pudieron establecerse semejanzas orientadas hacia una estandarización de las técnicas constructivas en el valle de Santa María desde, al menos, fines del periodo Formativo. ste trabalho aborda o problema da análise e caracterização do registro arquitetônico de sítios arqueológicos localizados na parte centro-oeste do vale de Santa Maria, habitada entre o final do período Formativo e o final do período Intermediário Final (séculos 8 a 15 d.C.). Com base em informações bibliográficas e dados de campo, foi feita uma descrição formal do registro arquitetônico a fim de caracterizar e comparar as técnicas de construção empregadas em quatro sítios funcionalmente diferentes. Como resultado, foi elaborado um léxico de técnicas e elementos de construção, aplicável aos sítios no vale de Santa Maria, bem como em outras áreas do noroeste da Argentina. Também foram identificadas diferenças entre as técnicas de construção, atribuíveis em alguns casos ao uso de diferentes técnicas ao longo do tempo e, em outros, a diferentes escolhas culturais.
