Sumario:This paper addresses the discussions about dissonance among meanings attributed to heritage by different actors. It also employs current conceptual discussions about tensions and conflicts in relation to heritage and local identity. The archaeological site "Tambería del Inca" located in the city of Chilecito, province of La Rioja, raises several questions about the process of its social construction as an identity local reference. It also offers the opportunity to study the attributions of value that it has received throughout the twentieth century to the present (by both national and provincial authorities, by the experts and mainly by Chilecito community). The scope and limitations of this site’s legal framework are problematized, considering the context in which it was developed and implemented as part of provincial policies.
