The nature of the temper used is analyzed to relate ceramic manufacture to regional geology, identifying some possible foreign groups. Broadly speaking, petrographic samples show significant variability, evidencing the selection of different raw materials and, possibly, several manufacturing traditions. The samples from the lower basin present a stronger homogeneity, which could have resulted from the functional needs implied in the process of agricultural intensification. On the other hand, in intermediate sectors, ceramic fabrics could be inferred as possible local traditions at the intra-site level. El objetivo de este trabajo es caracterizar las pastas cerámicas de diferentes sectores de Antofagasta de la Sierra a través de la petrografía, y aportar información que permita entender el manejo de las materias primas para comprender el tipo de relaciones que se establecieron entre los distintos grupos humanos. En esta ocasión se aborda la problemática que involucra a las interacciones y vínculos que se pudieron establecer entre las personas que habitaron el fondo de cuenca y los sectores intermedios de las quebradas en Antofagasta de la Sierra (provincia de Catamarca, Argentina) durante el período Tardío. Analizar la naturaleza de las inclusiones en las pastas, a través de la petrografía, permitió relacionar la manufactura cerámica con la geología regional, aunque se han identificado algunos conjuntos que podrían ser alóctonos. A nivel general, las muestras presentaron importante variabilidad petrográfica, lo cual refleja el empleo de distintas materias primas y posiblemente distintas tradiciones de manufactura. Las pastas de los fragmentos provenientes de los sitios ubicados en el fondo de cuenca, mostraron una mayor homogeneidad, lo cual podría deberse a necesidades funcionales demandadas por el proceso de intensificación agrícola. Por otro lado, en los sectores intermedios las pastas permiten inferir tradiciones locales a nivel intra-sitio. Con esta línea de investigación pretendemos aportar al conocimiento general de los sitios tardíos de la región, sumando el análisis petrográfico de las pastas cerámicas, vía que recientemente está comenzando a ser utilizada.
