To that end, several concepts of local development from the sociological, economic and economic-environmental perspective are revised. In addition, the evolution of the concept of public library is described from its origin until 2001. On the basis of the local development assumptions, its dimensions and the review of previous studies on the subject, its ties with public libraries are identified. It is concluded that this type of libraries can influence the social, cultural, political, economic,environmental and technological dimensions of the development process of a locality and propose there is a need to carry out comprehensive studies that allow to know and determine the contribution of libraries to local development. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar los planteamientos teóricos del desarrollo local y describir la incidencia de las bibliotecas en cada una de las dimensiones de ese proceso. Para ello, se revisan diversas concepciones del desarrollo local desde la perspectiva sociológica, económica y económica ambiental y se describe la evolución del concepto de biblioteca pública, desde su origen hasta 2001. A partir de los supuestos en torno al desarrollo local, las dimensiones que lo componen y la revisión de estudios previos en el tema, se identificaron los vínculos con las bibliotecas públicas. Se concluye que este tipo de bibliotecas pueden incidir en las dimensiones social, cultural, política, económica, ambiental y tecnológica del proceso de desarrollo de una localidad y se plantea la necesidad de realizar estudios integrales que permitan conocer y determinar la contribución de las bibliotecas al desarrollo local.
