The context of the research was an introduction course to physics. PI is a method in which students are encouraged to explain their understanding about conceptual issues to their colleagues and can be confronted with the understanding of their peers. Our research problem was: do student discussions increase the number of students who choose the right answer and affect the confidence level of these people in their answers? The data we obtained show a remarkable increase in the number of right answers and a very significant effect of peer instruction on students' confidence in their answers. Neste trabalho nós apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa na qual nós investigamos a utilização de um método de ensino e aprendizagem conhecido como Peer Instruction (PI). O contexto da pesquisa é um curso de introdução à Física oferecido em uma escola de ensino profissionalizante de nível médio. O PI é um método no qual os estudantes são estimulados a explicar sua compreensão dos conteúdos aos seus colegas e podem ser confrontados com a compreensão de seus pares. Nossa questão de pesquisa era: as discussões entre estudantes aumentam o número de estudantes que escolhem a resposta certa e afetam o nível de confiança desses sujeitos em suas respostas? Os dados que obtivemos mostram um aumento bastante expressivo no número de respostas certas e um efeito muito significativo das discussões entre pares sobre a confiança dos estudantes em suas respostas.
