The project is based on the concept of mental models in the light of Johnson-Laird's theory that allows us to draw students' ideas about the phenomena and gradually move towards conceptual models to explain what is being observed and studied from concepts Physical. Pensando nas dificuldades encontradas por alunos do ensino médio na disciplina de física, e na expectativa de incrementar as discussões no que diz respeito ao uso da experimentação no ensino de física no ensino médio de forma a buscar propostas que tornem as aulas mais atrativas e dinâmicas, o presente projeto apresenta a construção de um Gerador de Van de Graaff e seu uso nas aulas de Eletrostática considerando que sua confecção, a teoria e demonstração de seu funcionamento geral vêm adequar-se perfeitamente no ensino da área escolhida. O projeto fundamenta-se no conceito dos Modelos Mentais da teoria de Johnson-Laird, o que permitenos traçar as ideias dos alunos a respeito dos fenômenos e aos poucos avançar para modelos conceituais que expliquem o que está sendo observado e estudado a partir dos conceitos da Física.
