They are asked if (and how) the scale reading will be altered by placing a floating wooden body in the water. The researchquestion is what role the experiment occupies in the social mechanism of progressivity. The analysis shows that the experiment canstrongly influence the discursive dynamics in the classroom. In the case analyzed, it operates as an element that fixes a part of thesemantic structure. The study enriches the understanding of interactions in the classroom and how they could be fostered; at the sametime, it provides information about how to generate the conditions for an experiment to be relevant from the point of view of learningconcepts and can be interpreted in depth by students. Se presenta un estudio de caso de una clase real durante la cual los estudiantes analizan la situación de un recipiente con agua, ubicadosobre el platillo de una balanza. Se les pregunta si se alterará (y cómo) la lectura de la balanza al colocar en el agua un cuerpo demadera que flota. La pregunta de investigación es qué rol ocupa el experimento en el mecanismo social de la progresividad. El análisismuestra que el experimento puede incidir fuertemente en la dinámica discursiva en el aula. En el caso analizado opera como un elementoque fija una parte de la estructura semántica. El estudio enriquece la comprensión de las interacciones en el aula y de cómopodrían fomentarse; a la vez, aporta información acerca de cómo generar las condiciones para que un experimento tenga relevanciadesde el punto de vista de aprendizaje de conceptos y pueda ser interpretado en profundidad por los estudiantes.
