Some methodological aspects are discussed related to design and development of multiple-choice tests, emphasizing those connected with the need to reduce the probability of students passing by chance. In this respect, two strategies are discussed with mathematical detail: a) Negative scoring for wrong answers and b) Test design considering three crucial variables: the number of items, the number of options and the degree of demand. It is highlighted that increasing the number of items solely, not only does not reduce the probability of passing by chance, but even may raise it if the other two variables are not properly designed. Se presenta una síntesis sobre algunas cuestiones importantes de la evaluación como una etapa fundamental del proceso educativo, destacando su rol instrumental que admite distintas finalidades y modalidades. Se discuten algunos aspectos metodológicos relacionados con el diseño y la elaboración de las pruebas de opción múltiple, poniendo el énfasis en aquellos relacionados con la necesidad de reducir la probabilidad de que los alumnos aprueben por azar. Al respecto, se discuten con detalle matemático dos estrategias: a) la puntuación negativa de las respuestas incorrectas y b) el diseño de las pruebas considerando tres variables críticas: la cantidad de ítems, la cantidad de opciones y el grado de exigencia. Se destaca que un incremento en la cantidad de ítems, por sí solo, no solo no reduce la probabilidad de acertar por azar, sino que puede aumentarla si las otras dos variables no están adecuadamente diseñadas.
