Sumario:Results of a descriptive study of multiple cases are shown. The symbolic system and the linguistic system used for the conceptu-alization of the subject are analyzed in an intentional sample of ten university physics textbooks, frequently used in the basic cycle of scientific-technological careers developed in Argentina. The technique of content analysis was used to investigate the operational definition of work displayed in the texts. Some inconsistencies were detected between the linguistic system and the symbolic system that could make the understanding of the subject difficult and be a source of future complications when the concept is used in more complex situations.
