The symbolic system and the linguistic system used for the conceptu-alization of the subject are analyzed in an intentional sample of ten university physics textbooks, frequently used in the basic cycle of scientific-technological careers developed in Argentina. The technique of content analysis was used to investigate the operational definition of work displayed in the texts. Some inconsistencies were detected between the linguistic system and the symbolic system that could make the understanding of the subject difficult and be a source of future complications when the concept is used in more complex situations. Se muestran resultados de un estudio descriptivo de casos múltiples. Se analiza el sistema simbólico y el sistema lingüístico usado para la conceptualización del tema trabajo en una muestra intencional de diez libros de texto universitarios de física, empleados frecuentemente en el ciclo básico de carreras científico-tecnológicas que se desarrollan en Argentina. Se empleó la técnica análisis de contenido para investigar la definición operacional de trabajo que se exhibe en los textos. Se detectaron algu-nas inconsistencias entre el sistema lingüístico y el sistema simbólico que podrían dificultar la comprensión del tema y ser fuen-te de complicaciones futuras cuando el concepto es usado en situaciones más complejas.
