We selected the explanation of a technological object -printers- in six textbooks. We organize the study in three stages: analysis of the genre of the verbal text, analysis of the ideational meaning constructed by the images, and analysis of the logical-semantic relationships between the verbal and visual modes. The results show in the verbal texts a predominance of a sequence of events that explains the process of printing interrelated with a compositional report that pre-sents the components of the technological object and in visual texts an emphasis on the stages of the process or its components. The interrelation between verbal and visual texts is predominantly complementary, which requires that the reader implements specific inferential processes to overcome possible obstacles. This could be accomplished through tasks that guide students to unpack and link the typical semiotic systems of Physics. Este trabajo analiza las relaciones entre los sistemas semióticos que se conjugan al presentar explicaciones tecnológicas en libros de texto universitarios de física, con el objetivo de caracterizarlas con fines didácticos a la luz de los aportes de la lingüísti-ca sistémico-funcional. Para eso, se seleccionó el abordaje de un objeto tecnológico -las impresoras- en seis libros de texto. El estudio consta de tres etapas: análisis del género del texto verbal, análisis del significado ideacional construido por las imágenes y análisis de las relaciones lógico-semánticas entre los modos verbales y visuales. Los resultados muestran en los textos verbales un predominio de una secuencia de eventos que explica el proceso de impresión entrelazada con un informe composicional que presenta los componentes del objeto tecnológico y en los textos visuales un énfasis en las etapas del proceso o en sus compo-nentes. La interrelación entre los textos verbales y visuales es predominantemente complementaria, lo cual requiere que el lector ponga en marcha procesos inferenciales específicos para salvar los posibles obstáculos. Esto podría lograrse a través de tareas que guíen a los estudiantes a desentrañar y vincular los sistemas semióticos propios de la física.
