During the last five years, the Admittance System and the subject Introduction to Physics from the School of Engineering at the UNRC have been working on social networks, mainly with Whatsapp, to achieve argument and problem–solving skills in physics.Results obtained from the study allow us to state that social networks contribute to achieving both the intended skills and a higher academic performance in those students who actively interact with it. Furthermore, this interaction turns closed groups into a significant place to integrate into university culture. Study groups are fostered, academic and social communication among its members is enhanced and the feeling of uprooting is reduced in those students who come from other cities. University endeavors to reduce school dropout rates are also benefited. Desde hace cinco años, en el Sistema de Ingreso y en la asignatura Introducción a la Física de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNRC, se viene trabajando con las redes sociales, fundamentalmente Whatsapp, con el objetivo de favorecer el logro de las competencias de argumentación y resolución de problemas en física.Los resultados obtenidos permiten afirmar que las redes sociales no solo contribuyen al logro de las compe-tencias buscadas sino que además se observa que los alumnos que más interactúan logran en general un mejor rendimiento académico. Además, esa interacción transforma a los grupos cerrados en un importante espacio para la integración a la cultura universitaria, favoreciendo la conformación de grupos de estudio, potenciando la comunicación académica y social entre sus miembros y contribuyendo a disminuir la sensación de desarraigo que sufren quienes provienen de otras ciudades. En otros términos, el uso de redes sociales en contextos educativos puede favorecer también la tarea que desde la Facultad se realiza para disminuir los índices de deserción de la universidad.
