In undergraduate courses, the study of transverse mechanical waves is approached by modeling them mathe-matically through a harmonic function of two variables, which involves characteristic parameters whose nature is not immediate for students. In this study, and through a content analysis, we investigated if the authors of physics books frequently used in undergraduate courses present and explain the physical origin of those pa-rameters correctly, in order to make the conceptualization of the phenomenon easier for students.The results obtained show that many authors of the textbooks analyzed do not explicitly refer to the nature of the magnitudes and parameters involved, or relate them to the perturbing source and properties of the propagation medium. We mention recommendations for teachers to design didactic strategies that would favor the understanding of the wave phenomenon and its propagation. En el ciclo inicial universitario se aborda el estudio de las ondas mecánicas transversales modelándolas ma-temáticamente a través de una función armónica de dos variables que involucra parámetros característicos cuya naturaleza física no es inmediata para los estudiantes. En este estudio se indaga, a través de un análisis de contenido, si los autores de los libros de física usados frecuentemente en el ciclo inicial, presentan y explican adecuadamente el origen físico de dichos parámetros, de manera de facilitar a los estudiantes la conceptuali-zación del fenómeno. Del trabajo realizado se desprende que muchos de los autores de los libros de textos analizados no hacen referencia, de un modo explícito, a la naturaleza de las magnitudes y parámetros involu-crados, ni los relacionan con la fuente perturbadora y las propiedades del medio de propagación. Se mencionan algunas recomendaciones dirigidas a los docentes para el diseño de estrategias didácticas que favorezcan en los estudiantes la comprensión del fenómeno ondulatorio y su propagación.
