Presentamos una breve descripción de la primera detección de ondas gravitacionales. Aprovechamos para comentar aspectos fundamentales de la relatividad general, incluyendo algunos antecedentes históricos. Se describe el funcionamiento básico de los detectores, como así también características principales de su construcción. Presentamos un estudio preliminar de la señal detectada en septiembre de 2015 por los observatorios de ondas gravitacionales LIGO.
