It analyzes the set of determinations that builds this recessive scenario and the repercussions on the process of work of the social workers, as well as the challenges for maintain a critical social direction that contributes to the development of emancipatory social processes. O presente artigo versa sobre o atual contexto de profundo ataque as instância democráticas no Brasil vivenciado pelo conjunto das/dos trabalhadoras/es, onde se incluem a/os assistente sociais, a partir do golpe parlamentar de 2016 e do advento de governos conservadores de direita e ultradireita. Analisa-se o conjunto de determinações que conformam esse cenário recessivo e as repercussões no trabalho da/do assistente social, bem como os desafios para a manutenção de uma direção social crítica que contribua com o desenvolvimento de processos sociais emancipatórios.
