Sumario:This paper discusses the results of a research funded by the Sectoral Commission for Scientific Research of the University of the Republic for the study of the Implementation Plan for Mental Health Benefits in the National Integrated Health System in Uruguay. The purpose is to initiate a process of discussion about said Plan from the perspective of Social Work and the disciplines involved in this field, refuting its contents with the empirical evidence gathered from the ordering of available quantitative data and the systematization of qualitative information collected through the speeches of the actors involved (politicians, managers, academics, technicians and especially users). Based on this information, concepts are reviewed, the situation of Mental Health in our country is analyzed and considerations regarding the global operation of the plan are made from the perspective of the professionals involved and the users. In this way we hope to provoke the debate on the multidisciplinary crossroads in which Mental Health finds itself to understand the historical swings within the framework of the profound transformations undertaken in the region.
