Sumario:This work is based on the professional practice of intervention within the gerontological field, understanding it as a multidimensional space where the incidence of social work is central. The paper intends to reflect on the implication of this practice, to explain theoretical positions, and to propose some significant lines of intervention. Old age and aging are contextualized as a process of social construction which can be viewed in its micro and macro-social dimensions. The process of population aging and its main demographic trends are characterized. Next, the paradigm of rights and its repercussion in the gerontological field are analyzed. The importance of the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons is highlighted. Finally, the paper presents advances and setbacks from the perspective of rights and regulatory frameworks in force in the current socio-political context and the challenges arising for professional intervention from the establishment of neoliberalism.
