The paper intends to reflect on the implication of this practice, to explain theoretical positions, and to propose some significant lines of intervention. Old age and aging are contextualized as a process of social construction which can be viewed in its micro and macro-social dimensions. The process of population aging and its main demographic trends are characterized. Next, the paradigm of rights and its repercussion in the gerontological field are analyzed. The importance of the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons is highlighted. Finally, the paper presents advances and setbacks from the perspective of rights and regulatory frameworks in force in the current socio-political context and the challenges arising for professional intervention from the establishment of neoliberalism. El trabajo está basado en la práctica profesional de intervención dentro del campo gerontológico, entendiendo al mismo como un espacio multidimensional y en el cual la incidencia del trabajo social es nodal. Se propone  reflexionar sobre la implicancia de dicha práctica, explicitar posicionamientos teóricos y proponer algunas líneas de intervención significativas. Se contextualiza la vejez y el envejecimiento como un proceso de construcción social, que puede ser mirado en sus dimensiones micro y macro-social. Se caracteriza el proceso de envejecimiento poblacional y sus principales tendencias demográficas. Posteriormente, se analiza el paradigma de derechos y su repercusión en el campo gerontológico. Se destaca la importancia de la Convención Interamericana sobre la Protección de los Derechos Humanos de las Personas Mayores.
