With the purpose of providing empirical evidence, the present study aimed to assess the effect of varying the reading material on writing skills of college students. A pretest-post test experimental design with a control group was employed, involving 30 biology students assigned to three different conditions involving the exposure to reading materials and task resolution, subsequently, they wrote a text and a hypothetical experimental proposal. The results indicate correspondence between writing performances and the condition they were exposed to. The possibilities of generating didactic strategies related to the science of biology are discussed. Formar noveles estudiantes en un ámbito científico requiere de condiciones de enseñanza que les permita establecer contacto efectivo con criterios que regulan el quehacer disciplinar. Con el propósito de aportar evidencia empírica, el estudio tuvo como finalidad evaluar el efecto de variar los materiales de lectura sobre las habilidades escritoras en universitarios. Se empleó un diseño experimental preprueba-posprueba con grupo control, participaron 30 estudiantes de la licenciatura en biología, asignados aleatoriamente a tres condiciones de exposición a materiales de lectura y resolución de tareas, posteriormente, elaboraron un escrito y una propuesta experimental. Los resultados indican correspondencia entre el desempeño escritor y la condición de exposición. Se discute la posibilidad de generar estrategias didácticas con relación al dominio de la biología.
