Abstract11is paper descnbes the net for the popularization of science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (POP/UNESCO), which is in operation in the Region since 1990. hiere have been significant challenges in Latin America dealing with political, social, and economical aspecis; and nowadays they occurfrequently as a consequence of the rapid cultural transformations which take place in the world. One suchchallenge amis to achieve the incorporation of science and technology as an integral part of the culture inLatin American countries. To achicve the incorporation of society to a science an technology culture it isnecessary to generate divulge strategies capable of movilizing the political, institutional, social, and economical structures, so as to understand the complex and global situatioris which affect the world. Thescience and technoLogy literacy constitutes nowadays a social and etliical right of humankind. ResumenAmérica Latina siempre ha planteado grandes desafíos políticos, económicos y sociales a los pueblos que laintegran Aún hoy, frente al evidente proceso de transformación cultural que vive el mundo entero, estosdesafíos son una constante. Lograr, como proyecto colectivo, que la ciencia y la tecnología formen parte dela cultura de los pueblos latinoamericanos, es uno de ellos. Para que la sociedad pueda incorporarse a lacultura científico-tecnológica se hace imprescindible generar estrategias de divulgación que movilicen estructuras políticas, institucionales, sociales y económicas, que le permitan entender la complejidad y globalidad de situaciones por las que atraviesa el mundo actual, por Cuanto hoy la alfabetización científica y tecnológica se ha convertido en un derecho social y ético del hombre. En este sentido la Red de Popularización de la Ciencia y la Tecnología en América Latina y el Caribe (Red-POPIUNESCO) se encuentra trabajando desde 1990 en la Región.
