Due to their subterranean behavior, the habit of burrowing galleries and vertical distribution in the soil, the main ecological categories and their general characteristics are given. In addition, the practical potential of these animals (vermiculture) and the convenience of knowing the beneficial species for a rational exploitation are indicated. En el presente artículo se señala la importancia de las lombrices de tierra en la formación y mantenimiento de la estructura edáfica. Debido a su comportamiento subterráneo, al hábito de excavar galerías y a la distribución vertical en el suelo, se dan las principales categorías ecológicas y sus características generales. Además se indica el potencial práctico de estos animales (lombricultura) y la conveniencia de conocer las especies beneficiosas para una explotación racional.
