Thus, the objective of this research was to identify how microbiology is being approached and what are the challenges faced by teachers in teaching this science. Data collection was carried out with teachers from different regions of Brazil through a questionnaire, which was analyzed statistically and through content analysis. The results show that the most used methodology is the traditional class and that the main challenges are the lack of resources, time, adequate infrastructure and pedagogical support. However, teachers are interested in investing in change. Therefore, it is considered important to invest in continuing training to highlight the possibility of using different teaching strategies and encourage changes in teaching practice. Os microrganismos contribuem de forma efetiva para a vida, o que justifica o estudo da microbiologia na Educação básica. Assim, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi identificar como a microbiologia está sendo abordada e quais os desafios enfrentados pelos professores no ensino dessa ciência. A coleta de dados foi realizada com professores de diferentes regiões do Brasil por meio de um questionário, que foi analisado estatisticamente e através da análise de conteúdo. Os resultados evidenciam que a metodologia mais utilizada é a aula tradicional e que os principais desafios são a falta de recursos, tempo, infraestrutura adequada e apoio pedagógico. Contudo, os professores possuem interesse em investir em mudanças. Assim, considera-se importante investir na formação continuada para evidenciar a possibilidade de utilizar diferentes estratégias didáticas e incentivar mudanças na prática docente.
