Sumario:In the teaching of cellular respiration, an analogy is presented between respiration and chemical combustion, represented by a global equation warning that it is a "controlled combustion". The relationship between the processes of respiration and combustion arises at the end of the 18th century, during the debate between defenders of the phlogiston theory and its detractors. This research presents an analysis of the conceptual construction of cellular respiration by students and the use of the comparison between cellular respiration and combustion during teaching activities. The research is part of a doctoral thesis on difficulties in teaching and obstacles in learning cellular respiration.
