The purpose of this research was to detect Non-Compulsory Biology Secondary Education students´ prior knowledge on food and nutrition in a Penal Institution in Spain (Badajoz), and to design an educational intervention aimed at promoting the evolution and improvement of such nutritional knowledge. The results showed statistically significant differences in terms of the variables analyzed, concluding that the intervention made contributes to the students’ conceptual change and to the acquisition of new methodological tools for Biology teachers. Los conocimientos previos son estructuras cognitivas que ejercen una función esencial en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Por ello, el objetivo de esta investigación fue detectar los conocimientos previos alimenticio-nutricionales de los estudiantes privados de libertaddel último curso de Educación Secundaria Postobligatoria de Biología en Badajoz (España) y, a partir de ellos, diseñar una intervención educativa con el fin de promover la evolución y mejora de los mismos. Para ello se utilizó una metodología mixta basada en cuestionarios.
