These tasks require the use, reading or production of the figurative nature of graphic representations. This study was carried out in two complementary stages: firstly, we focused on the characterization of the representational nature of the graphic information, and secondly we focused on their levels of processing. With this analysis we present some considerations about the importance of the use of figurative representations for the teaching of these sciences, as well as the potential cognitive richness that working with those representations has in the university classroom. En este trabajo se presenta un análisis de consignas que se ofrecen a estudiantes universitarios de Ciencias Biológicas, en donde se solicita el uso, lectura o producción de representaciones externas de tipo fi gurativas. Este análisis se realizó en dos sentidos complementarios: en primer lugar, nos centramos en la caracterización de la naturaleza representacional de la información gráfi ca, para luego atender a los niveles de procesamiento de las mismas. Tras este análisis se presentan algunas consideraciones sobre la importancia del uso de representaciones fi gurativas para la enseñanza de las ciencias, así como también sobre la riqueza cognitiva potencial que tiene el trabajo con ellas en las aulas universitarias.
