| Sumario: | An approach to the cultural biography of a Baroque-style easel painting, which entered the TAREA Restoration Center (EAyP, UNSAM) in 2019, is presented. To this end, the artwork was studied from both the material and ichnographic points of view using a comprehensive methodological approach. Macroscopic organoleptic and physicochemical studies were performed, along with an examination of documentary sources, as complementary and successive lines of evidence.
As a result, an approximation to the different biographical episodes that the painting went through, from its creation to the present, was achieved. A tentative chronological framework was then provided for these episodes. Likewise, different characteristics of the artwork's pictorial technique were glimpsed, allowing for an estimation of the painting's origin. Additionally, the original elements, additions, and subsequent interventions were identified. Finally, the study and careful observation of the artwork put into tension the iconographic attribution with which the painting entered the Center, leading to a change in interpretation. |
