And to analyze what roleplayed the guilds and other forms of labor organization like the obrajes in the transmission ofmanual knowledge. The evidence provided indicates that castes and obrajes were key variablesthat explain the peculiarity of the New Spain case, as well as the imposition of a paternalistic modelof apprenticeship. Este artículo estudia una muestra de 1927 escrituras de aprendizaje suscritas en la ciudad deMéxico a lo largo de toda la etapa virreinal. Entre sus objetivos está integrar la problemáticadel aprendizaje artesano de Latinoamérica en el debate suscitado en Europa sobre esta formade instrucción en aspectos como la procedencia geográfica, social y étnica de los aprendices, yver qué papel jugaron los gremios y otras formas de organización laboral como los obrajes en latransmisión del conocimiento menestral. Las evidencias aportadas indican que castas y obrajesfueron variables claves que explican la peculiaridad del caso novohispano, así como la imposiciónde un modelo paternalista de aprendizaje.
