This is what occurs with drought cycles and floods that characterize the Province of Buenos Aires. Being such highly recurrent disasters, we ought to ask ourselves how is it that rural communities live with, experience, perceive and remember them. We believe these questions can be formulated in the academic sector by means of a cultural study of disasters that involves the past, present and future dimensions of flood processes in an important region within the livestock nucleus of the Province of Buenos Aires: The Salado River’s lower basin. La interacción sociedad-naturaleza implica para las comunidades humanas convivir con fenómenos naturales que, al tener contacto con grupos vulnerables, ocasionan estragos en los sistemas productivos y la vida cotidiana de las personas, estragos a los que solemos denominar “desastres”. Esto es lo que sucede con los ciclos de sequías e inundaciones que caracterizan a la Provincia de Buenos Aires. Al ser desastres altamente recurrentes, cabe preguntarse cómo es que las comunidades rurales conviven con ellos, los experimentan, los perciben y los recuerdan. Creemos que estos interrogantes pueden formularse en el ámbito académico desde un estudio cultural de los desastres que involucre las dimensiones pasadas, presentes y futuras de los procesos de inundación en una región importante dentro del núcleo ganadero de la provincia de Buenos Aires: la Cuenca Baja del Río Salado.
