The aim of the essay is to demonstrate that the local elite made important profits (political and economic) from the utilization of this institutions, a very important fact in order to understand the three centuries long maintenance of the Spanish Empire in America. El presente artículo presenta de forma sintetizada la estructura administrativa de la Audiencia de Guatemala entre los siglos XVIy XVIII y analiza las relaciones entre la sociedad colonial y las instituciones imperiales, con el objetivo de demostrar que la utilización de estas instituciones por parte de un sector de la sociedad, la élite económica, es un aspecto fundamental para entender el mantenimiento del imperio español en América durante más de tres siglos.
