A partir del estudio de documentos oficiales producidos en Córdoba del Tucumán (1573-1700), intentamos reconocer las etnocategorías (aquellas empleadas por los enunciadores de los documentos) que establecen cortes en lo social (Vgr. español, indio, natural, pieza, indio de taza, encomendado, tributario, yanacona, mitayo, cacique, curaca, alcalde, mestizo, etc.), el contenido que estas categorías adquieren en los documentos, las relaciones entre ellas, los principios a partir de los cuales se pueden organizar y las funciones que cumplen estas divisiones en relación al sistema colonial del cual emergen.
