The lawsuit brought in March 1779 to the Viceroy Vértiz Court triggered actions and reactions which could not have been observed otherwise. This work focuses on a particular and, to a certain extent, exceptional case in order to seize, through it, a reality that is beyond itself. This does not suppose a reduction of the object of the investigation but of the scale of observation. Thus, this case becomes a privileged spot from where to observe the tensions it caused within the local elite; the resources that this elite put into action in order to reestablish an order it felt threaten; and the role played by the Bourbon officials in this conflict under the particular circumstances of late eighteen century, in the Río de la Plata region. La decisión de una mujer de la elite santafesina de entablar juicio por adulterio contra su marido -personaje clave dentro de la estructura reticular del poder local no era la conducta "esperable" en tanto este tipo de conflicto encontraba generalmente resolución dentro del ámbito doméstico, a través de la negociación y el ocultamiento. La presentación de la demanda en marzo de 1779 ante el Virrey Vértiz funcionó como disparador de conductas y reacciones a las que, de otro modo, no hubiéramos podido acceder. Este trabajo intenta partir de un caso particular, y hasta cierto punto excepcional, con el fin de acceder, a través de él, a una realidad que lo trasciende. No se propone, entonces, la reducción del objeto observado sino de la escala de observación, convirtiendo el caso en lugar privilegiado desde donde observar las tensiones que provocó dentro de la elite local, los recursos que ésta movilizó para restituir un orden que sintió amenazado y el papel que jugó la oficialidad borbónica en el conflicto, en la especial coyuntura de fines del siglo XVIII en el espacio rioplatense.
