El estudio de las explotaciones familiares ocupa un lugar muy importante en la historia rural pampeana. Es aún sin embargo muy poco lo que conocemos acerca de las mismas en las fronteras del litoral de tiempos coloniales. Aquí intentaremos pasar revista a la evolución de las formas que fueron adoptando esas unidades familiares entre 1782 y 1820, prestando atención a la medida en que las afectaron la evolución del poblamiento, la disponibilidad de recursos y los quiebres de la historia económica y política del periodo y del área.
