We will explore the social, economic, and political relationships that made him one of the most wealthy and powerful oidor in the nascent Peruvian Viceroyalty. His insightful ties, along with his kinship ties, positioned him among the outstanding elite of Lima. The study of his personal life and  relationships will allow us to better understand how the post of oidor in Spanish America was used to establish new lineages, commercial interests, promote patrimonial enhancement and social advancement. Este trabajo reconstruirá la trayectoria del licenciado Pedro Mercado de Peñaloza, oidor de la Audiencia de Lima, entre los años 1553 y 1562. Indagaremos las relaciones sociales, económicas y políticas que hicieron del licenciado Mercado de Peñalosa uno de los oidores más ricos y de mayor influencia en el naciente virreinato del Perú. Sus fructíferos vínculos, sumados a sus estratégicas alianzas familiares, posicionaron al licenciado Peñalosa como parte destacada de la élite limeña. Estudiar su vida personal y relacional nos brindará herramientas para comprender más acabadamente cómo se utilizó el oficio de magistrado en América para forjar linajes, intereses comerciales, acrecentamientos patrimoniales y sobre todo el tan deseado ascenso social.
