Sumario:The main objective of this paper is to understand the different policies of the Catholic Kings regarding the peasant indebtedness in Avila. The debt is a central aspect that affects the chances of reproduction of peasant economies. The link between debt and feudal taxes is highlighted, as well as tensions in royal interventions. We frame this paper within the discussion that construes the reign of the Catholic Monarchs as a period marked by the protection of peasants. However these analyses do not inquire deeply into the performance of the Monarchs in relation to the widespread problem of peasant indebtedness. Far from the existence of a protectionist spirit, their actions are determined by material needs as well as political issues.
