The debt is a central aspect that affects the chances of reproduction of peasant economies. The link between debt and feudal taxes is highlighted, as well as tensions in royal interventions. We frame this paper within the discussion that construes the reign of the Catholic Monarchs as a period marked by the protection of peasants. However these analyses do not inquire deeply into the performance of the Monarchs in relation to the widespread problem of peasant indebtedness. Far from the existence of a protectionist spirit, their actions are determined by material needs as well as political issues. El presente trabajo propone abordar las diversas intervenciones de los Reyes Católicos ante el endeudamiento del campesinado abulense. El endeudamiento conforma un aspecto clave que incide en las posibilidades de reproducción de las economías pecheras. El vínculo entre endeudamiento y renta feudal es puesto de relieve, así como las tensiones en las intervenciones regias. Inscribimos este trabajo en la discusión con las interpretaciones que conciben al reinado de los Reyes Católicos como un período de protección de los tributarios. Estos análisis no indagaron en profundidad en la actuación de los mismos en relación al extendido problema del endeudamiento pechero. Lejos de la existencia de un espíritu proteccionista de los reyes, sus actuaciones están determinadas por necesidades materiales así como por otras de orden político.
