description This article aims to contribute to the study of the construction of the relationship between the rosismo and the afroporteña population, focusing particularly on the strategies employed to gain their support. The work develops from the hypothesis that this group’s support, along with other aspects of the regime, had to be built and negotiated. In order to study this hypothesis, it analyzes a particular period of crisis, the government of Juan Ramón Balcarce in 1833, when Rosas leaves the government and a fight breaks out between two federal factions, which acquired special virulence in the city of Buenos Aires. The population of African origin was an important component of the subaltern sectors of the city, and therefore, to obtain their support seemed to be a central objective of the political opponents of the moment, especially -but not exclusively- of the rosismo. Within this population, the study centers on the search for the support of the militias of free black men called “Defensores de Buenos Aires”.To shed light on this point, on one hand, the article evaluates the works that referred to the relationship of the afroporteños with the rosismo. On the other hand, it briefly narrates the context that resulted in the “revolución de los restauradores” in October of 1833, to then present the mentions of the contact with the afroporteña population in the press and correspondence of that moment. Finally, it examines the discourses of the press that pretended to represent the voice of the afroporteños, analyzing the figures and topics that were used to obtain their support and tracking the references to the “Defensores de Buenos Aires” regiment.
