I10-R303-article-440192024-02-20T20:31:40Z Overview of the Status of Sworn Translators and Interpreters in Colombia Portrait du statut des traducteurs et des interprètes officiels en Colombie Zuluaga Molina, Juan Felipe official translation and interpretation sworn translation status of the translator translation in Colombia traduction et interprétation officielles traduction assermentée statut du traducteur traduction en Colombie In Colombia, the interest in sworn translation and interpretation is experiencing unprecedented growth at the academic, professional and corporate levels. Over the past decade, associations, regulations and initiatives have emerged, which have made it possible to advance reflections on these professions, as well as advocacy for their recognition and visibility. This article aims to contribute to academic reflections on the subject by updating the demographic profile of professionals in these fields in Colombia. To this end, we will discuss some of the data collected through a survey conducted between 2019 and 2020 among 200 official translators and interpreters as part of a larger sociological case study of a mixed nature (Zuluaga, 2020a). The results align with those of previous studies on the hegemony of certain languages on the Colombian translation scene and the balanced distribution of men and women practicing the profession. Moreover, as additional elements of discussion, we analyzed aspects related to the demographic distribution of translators considering new variables such as the representativeness of languages in this distribution, as well as the lack of literacy and poverty in regions where there are none or very few official translators to meet the sporadic requests for this service.
