However, this was not always the case. The complaints from the members of the Deaf sign language communities were neither heard nor addressed, and the linguistic validity of this particular language, which is presented before our eyes in a visual-gestural modality, was not taken into consideration. During the last sixty years, different scientific contributions coming from Human Sciences have allowed a sustained change that favors different proposals of accessibility within a framework of universal design. It is said that this is also the mission of Translation in its calling to break down barriers. The professionalization of sign language interpreters (SLI) represents a remarkable change in the approach to a disregarded working language belonging to a linguistic minority. These and other aspects linked to the socio-historical evolution of this particular translation activity will be addressed at the conference, which is intended to provide a framework of reference for those colleagues in translation and interpreting with other working languages. En la actualidad, la interpretación en lengua de señas y en lengua oral ocupa, cada vez más, su lugar en la oferta y demanda de los servicios de traducción en nuestro país, nuestra región y el mundo. Pero no siempre fue así. El reclamo de los integrantes de las comunidades Sordas señantes de la lengua de señas no fueron atendidos ni escuchados ni tampoco se consideró la validez lingüística de esta particular lengua que se presenta, ante nuestros ojos, en una modalidad visogestual. Durante los últimos sesenta años, diferentes aportes científicos provenientes de las ciencias humanas permitieron un cambio sostenido que favorece distintas propuestas de accesibilidad en un marco de diseño universal. ¿No es acaso también la misión de la traducción en su vocación de derribar barreras? La profesionalización de los intérpretes de lengua de señas (los ILS) representa un notable cambio en el abordaje con una lengua de trabajo minorizada y perteneciente a una minoría lingüística. Estos y otros aspectos ligados a la evolución sociohistórica de esta particular actividad traductológica serán abordados en la conferencia que tiene la vocación de brindar un marco de referencia a aquellos colegas de la traducción y de la interpretación con otras lenguas de trabajo.
