The research was applied and inductive, of a descriptive-empirical nature and the research design was non-experimental and observational with a quantitative approach and a method of documenting research developed in the field of linguistics. The general corpus was the novel Lituma en los Andes written by Mario Vargas Llosa and its translation into English Death in the Andes by Edith Grossman. The specific corpus was composed of 60 references of 4 types: natural environment, cultural heritage, social culture and linguistic culture. The observation technique and corpus analysis were used. The findings indicated that were identified 3 advantages of the foreignization strategies in the criterion of translatability with 43 cases (72%), intentionality with 10 cases (17%) and comprehensibility with 7 cases (11%) thanks to diverse techniques of foreignization strategies. Finally, it was concluded that the advantages of foreignization strategies provide a valuable transfer of the connotative and semiotic resonance of the cultural reference, facilitate its comprehension and intelligibility and allow the conservation of the original intention of the author as well as the same communicative effect in the target reader. El estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las ventajas de las estrategias de extranjerización en la traducción de referentes culturales de Lituma en los Andes. La investigación fue aplicada e inductiva, de nivel descriptivo-empírico y de diseño no experimental y observacional, con un enfoque cuantitativo y un método de investigación documental desarrollado en el campo de la lingüística. El corpus general fue la novela Lituma en los Andes de Mario Vargas Llosa y su traducción Death in the Andes por Edith Grossman. El corpus específico fue compuesto por 60 referentes de 4 tipos: medio natural, patrimonio cultural, cultura social y lingüística. Se emplearon la técnica de la observación y el análisis del corpus. Los resultados indicaron que se identificaron 3 ventajas en los criterios de traducibilidad con 43 casos (72%), intencionalidad con 10 casos (17%) y comprensibilidad con 7 casos (11%) a través de diversas técnicas de las estrategias de extranjerización. Finalmente, se concluyó que las ventajas de las estrategias de extranjerización proporcionan una transferencia valiosa de la resonancia connotativa y semiótica del referente cultural, facilitan su compresión e inteligibilidad y permiten la conservación de la intención original del autor y la transmisión del mismo efecto comunicativo en el lector meta.
