Metaphors, conceived as a major cognitive device for the conceptualization of science and disease, play a key role in communicating scientific advancements to lay audiences. However, they often pose an obstacle to translators who find it difficult to recognize, interpret and translate them. This paper reports on the findings from the analysis of two scientific popularization articles on cancer published by the newspaper The New York Times and the science magazine Scientific American. The analysis follows a two-phased approach: first, we adopt a cognitive-discursive perspective (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980; van Dijk, 1995; Semino et al, 2015 and 2018) to describe the metaphors present in the articles originally written in English. Then, drawing upon the notion of translation as a decision-making and problem-solving process (PACTE, 2003; Hurtado Albir, 2017), we analyze the strategies employed by the Spanish linguists to translate such metaphors into Spanish. The analysis results in the identification of similarities and differences as to domains and conceptual mappings between languages while recognizing the local and global effects that the various translation solutions provided bring about in the target text. En este artículo se presentan los resultados preliminares de un proyecto de investigación más amplio que explora cómo se traducen al español las metáforas sobre el cáncer en un corpus de artículos de divulgación científica escritos en inglés. Las metáforas, concebidas como mecanismos cognitivos esenciales en la conceptualización de la enfermedad y la ciencia, son un recurso fundamental para comunicar los avances científicos a las audiencias no especialistas. Sin embargo, en muchas ocasiones representan un desafío para los traductores, que suelen tener dificultades para reconocerlas, interpretarlas y traducirlas. Se informan los resultados obtenidos del análisis de dos artículos sobre el cáncer, uno del periódico The New York Times y otro de la revista Scientific American. En una primera fase del análisis, se adopta una perspectiva cognitivo-discursiva (Lakoff y Johnson, 1980; van Dijk, 1995; Semino y otros, 2015 y 2018) para describir las metáforas presentes en los textos en inglés. En una segunda fase, se parte de la concepción de la traducción como un proceso de toma de decisiones y resolución de problemas (PACTE, 2003; Hurtado Albir, 2017) para analizar las estrategias que emplea el traductor para traducir las metáforas al español. Se identifican similitudes y diferencias en cuanto a dominios y proyecciones conceptuales entre idiomas y se analizan los efectos locales y globales que las diversas soluciones generan en el texto meta.
