Sumario:This article presents the preliminary results of a larger research project that explores the translation of cancer metaphors in a corpus of scientific popularization articles. Metaphors, conceived as a major cognitive device for the conceptualization of science and disease, play a key role in communicating scientific advancements to lay audiences. However, they often pose an obstacle to translators who find it difficult to recognize, interpret and translate them. This paper reports on the findings from the analysis of two scientific popularization articles on cancer published by the newspaper The New York Times and the science magazine Scientific American. The analysis follows a two-phased approach: first, we adopt a cognitive-discursive perspective (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980; van Dijk, 1995; Semino et al, 2015 and 2018) to describe the metaphors present in the articles originally written in English. Then, drawing upon the notion of translation as a decision-making and problem-solving process (PACTE, 2003; Hurtado Albir, 2017), we analyze the strategies employed by the Spanish linguists to translate such metaphors into Spanish. The analysis results in the identification of similarities and differences as to domains and conceptual mappings between languages while recognizing the local and global effects that the various translation solutions provided bring about in the target text.
