“Negra, puta y villera”: an autoethnography on gender violence

This is a first-person account of gender violence, in which I use auto-ethnography as the main methodological and narrative tool. In the article, I analyze a relationship with a violent male partner marked by three differences that worked as hierarchies: class, age and gender. Throughout the paper,...

In the article, I analyze a relationship with a violent male partner marked by three differences that worked as hierarchies: class, age and gender. Throughout the paper, I will relate some scenes of my story from the perspective of gender theory, with the aim of understanding the complex and often contradictory characteristics of violence against women. A central point will be the analysis of my personal history and the connections with the histories of the women in my family with respect to certain gender mandates, making evident the existing links between the discomfort in relation to these problems and the inequality and social inequity in which they are inscribed as members of a patriarchal society. My encounter with a social theory that questioned the role of gender and sexual hierarchies within human relations was fundamental to signify this experience, and to be able to construct meaning between a theoretical tool and an embodied practice.
