description The purpose of this paper is to investigate the way in which the Hobbesian state of Leviathan has a connection with the Freudian culture model present in Totem and Taboo and in The Civilization and Its Discontents. In both authors lies the idea that, both the state and the culture come from a totalizing impersonal entity. To do this, at first, we will elucidate the concept of cultural superego and its relationship with the figure of Leviathan. Subsequently, we will analyses the murder of the father by the primordial horde, the totemic banquet and its link with the concept of state by assimilation.First, we address the concept of Leviathan for Hobbes. For the author, the Leviathan is an entity formed from unified wills through a contract that gives the subjects security and trust. To explain the rise of Leviathan and the appearance of the modern state, Hobbes theorizes about a mythical moment of state of nature. This state is without order, morality and ethics; and has an exacerbated and violent individualism. A lack of a unified power that governs and limits the actions of citizens cause this state. The subsequent assimilation of individual wills in a totalizing entity - as is the Leviathan - mitigates the fear of being attacked and killed by others. The Leviathan, therefore, stands as an artificial God, who imposes order, providing peace and security.Secondly, we make a comparison of the notion of culture in Freud and the Hobbesian state. These concepts have points of contact and similarities, prima facie. However, the main divergence is that for Freud, culture finds its genesis in the fantasized repetition of the murder of the father by the primordial horde. That is, it is a very impulsive act. While for Hobbes, the primary point of the state has a social contract determining it, this being a rational act. The most notable coincidence is that both - the father of the horde and the Leviathan - exert power through force. Therefore, the fear produces the state and the culture. For us, that fear is one of the psychic foundations of the state.Subsequently we make a comparative analysis between the concept of cultural superego and Leviathan. We understand that both fulfill, in these authors, the same function: to be the agglutinating totalizing entity of the state. Consequently, they are a necessary condition for the conformation of the modern state and culture. However, it would be wrong to understand these terms as synonyms. The big difference between the two is some person are personifying and materializing the Leviathan. The Superego is the introjection to the murdered father's psychic apparatus. We understand that the Oedipus complex plays a decisive role here. Finally, we will work around the unconscious vestiges that serve as a psychic support for the state. For Freud, the murdered father is who allows the introduction of the law into psychic through the awareness of guilt and punishment. While for Hobbes "the state is all", for us, the state is part of all. The subjects introject the law that allows us to live in society under the primacy of a state. If the law is absent, as a psychoanalytic term, there would be no psychic structure that allows the state to be sustained in the psyche. The psychic material resulting from the conflicting oedipal and the unconscious vestiges from the guilt conscience for the murder of the father are the main psychic foundation of the modern state. The unconscious embed the state, this is a non-rational psychic foundations. This allow the assimilation of the state as a supreme entity, dispenser of protection, and punishment before the breach of the law. In psychoanalysis, this is the role of the father.
