Through these, we examine the uses of the signifier "negro" in the Rioplatense dialect. These polysemic uses display meanings that vary depending on specific situations. To address this, we classified the different uses according to the social background of the speakers and the diverse speech situations: as a denomination used by the dominant classes, as a term employed by social groups seeking to differentiate and distance themselves, as a form of reappropriation, and as an affectionate word or nickname. Behind the routine use and preference for one word over others lies a history that reveals struggles over its meaning. The struggle over the label "negro" has multiple facets in Argentina, particularly in areas that received internal migrants in the mid-20th century. Moreover, the power relations involved in attempts to universalize typifications of antagonistic groups influence both the imposed social imaginary and the available linguistic variants. This would explain why speakers from the same social groups develop differentiation strategies, establishing internal sub-strata and adopting linguistic alternatives from other groups. Esta investigación es el resultado de relevamientos de conversaciones registradas en el medio urbano de La Plata en situaciones comunicativas ordinarias, así como de diversas fuentes hipermediáticas. A partir de estos, examinamos usos en la variante dialectal rioplatense del significante “negro”. Estos usos polisémicos presentan significados que responden a variantes dependientes de situación concretas. Para abordarlo clasificamos los diferentes empleos según la inscripción social de los hablantes y las diversas situaciones de habla: como denominación usada por las clases dominantes, usada por grupos sociales que buscan diferenciarse y separarse, como reapropiación y como apelativo afectuoso o apodo. Detrás del uso rutinario y la preferencia de una palabra por sobre otras, existe una historia que revela luchas por su sentido. La lucha por la etiqueta “negro” tiene pluralidad de aristas en la Argentina, especialmente en las áreas receptoras de migrantes internos a mediados de siglo XX. Por otro lado, las relaciones de fuerza implicadas en los alcanzas para universalizar tipificaciones de grupos antagonistas, rigen tanto sobre del imaginario social impuesto, como sobre las variantes lingüísticas disponibles. Esto explicaría que hablantes pertenecientes a las mismas sociales desarrollen estrategias de diferenciación, estableciendo sub-estratos internos y tomando alternativas lingüísticas de otros grupos.
