These lipids are the precursors of numerous molecules with intense biological activity, collectively called “eicosanoids” that include endocannabinoids (ECB) or endogenous cannabinoids. This article reviews the components of the ECB system, and its functions in health conditions and in situations of chronic stress, depression and anxiety, circumstances usually associated. The effects of exogenous administration of PUFAs and the consequent modulation of the ECB system are also described, both at clinical and experimental level. It is proposed that the ECB system could be favorably modified by exogenous manipulation of PUFAs present in the body, through dietary modifications by food choice. This could potentially facilitate the prevention and management of mood disorders particularly stress, other mood states such as depression, anxiety and similar conditions that affect psycho-emotional health.

Los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGP) “esenciales” específicamente los de las familias omega-6 y omega-3 deben ingerirse obligadamente a través de los alimentos. Estos lípidos son los precursores de numerosas moléculas con intensa actividad biológica denominadas en conjunto “eicosanoides” en los que se incluyen a los endocanabinoides (ECB) o cannabinoides endógenos. Este artículo revisa los componentes del sistema ECB, y sus funciones en condiciones de salud y en situaciones de estrés crónico, depresión y ansiedad, circunstancias usualmente asociadas. También se describen los efectos de la administración exógena de los AGP y la consiguiente modulación del sistema ECB, tanto a nivel clínico como experimental. Se propone que el sistema ECB podría modificarse favorablemente mediante la manipulación exógena de los AGP presentes en el organismo, a través de la elección de los alimentos. Potencialmente, esto podría facilitar la prevención y control de las alteraciones del estado de ánimo, en particular estrés, depresión, ansiedad y trastornos semejantes que afectan la salud psicoemocional. Esses lipídios são os precursores de muitas moléculas de intensa bioatividade, chamadas coletivamente de “eicosanóides” que incluem os endocanabinóides (ECB) ou canabinóides endógenos. Este artigo analisa os componentes do sistema ECB e as suas funções em condições de saúde e em situações de estresse crônico, depressão e ansiedade, circunstâncias habitualmente associadas. Os efeitos da administração exógena de PUFAs e a consequente modulação do sistema ECB também são descritos. Propõe-se que o sistema do ECB possa ser modificado favoravelmente pela manipulação exógena dos PUFAs presentes no corpo, através de modificações dietéticas. Isto poderia potencialmente facilitar la prevenção e gestão de perturbações do humor, particularmente estresse, depressão, ansiedade e perturbações semelhantes que afetam a saúde psicoemocional.
