There is substantial evidence to suggest that several psychiatric conditions (including stress and depression), immunological disorders, neurological conditions, and endocrine abnormalities are low grade systemic inflammatory diseases in which pro-inflammatory mediators are substantially increased while anti-inflammatory molecules are deficient. This imbalance in the molecules involved in inflammation and immune response regulation results in the balance being shifted more towards pro-inflammatory events that can lead to the initiation, progression and continuation of the disease process(es). In such an event, methods designed to enhance the concentrations of anti-inflammatory molecules and suppressing inappropriate production and action of pro-inflammatory mediators may form a novel approach to many diseases. Cytokines, bioactive lipids and corresponding enzyme systems and their specific precursors and associated molecules seem to be at the centre of this imbalance between the pro- and anti-inflammatory events. Based on the current evidence, it is suggested that administration of appropriate amounts of bioactive lipids arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids and anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 and anti-oxidants glutathione, vitamins C, B1, B6, B12 and other co-factors needed to restore the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory events and restore homeostasis may form a new approach in the prevention and management of various diseases/disorders. |

Existe evidencia sustancial que varias condiciones psiquiátricas (incluyendo el estrés y la depresión), diversos trastornos inmunológicos, ciertas afecciones neurológicas, y algunas anomalías endócrinas, serían procesos inflamatorios sistémicos de “bajo grado” en los cuales los mediadores proinflamatorios estarían aumentados y la disponibilidad de moléculas antiinflamatorias disminuida. Este desequilibrio entre moléculas involucradas en la regulación de la respuesta inmune resultaría en un desplazamiento de la homeoestasis hacia eventos y circunstancias proinflamatorias, influyendo en el inicio, progresión y duración de las enfermedades mencionadas. Dado que las citoquinas y sus moléculas asociadas estarían en el centro de ese desequilibrio, sugerimos aquí que la administración de cantidades apropiadas de lípidos bioactivos tales como ácidos araquidónico eicosapentaenoico y docosahexaenoico, citoquinas antiinflamatorias IL-4 e IL-10, el antioxidante glutatión, las vitaminas C, B1, B6, B12, y otros cofactores, podría constituir una estrategia novedosa para el tratamiento de estas enfermedades. Há evidências substanciais que sugerem que várias condições psiquiátricas (incluindo estresse e depressão), vários distúrbios imunológicos, certas condições neurológicas e anormalidades endócrinas são processos inflamatórios sistêmicos de “baixo grau” nos quais os mediadores pró-inflamatórios são substancialmente aumentados enquanto a disponibilidade de anti-moléculas inflamatórias é deficiente. Este desequilíbrio entre as moléculas envolvidas na inflamação e a regulação da resposta imune faz com que o equilíbrio homeostático se desloque mais para eventos e circunstâncias pró-inflamatórias, condições que podem causar o aparecimento, progressão e durabilidade das doenças supracitadas. Diante dessas condições, estratégias destinadas a aumentar as concentrações de moléculas anti-inflamatórias e diminuir ou suprimir a produção e ação inadequada de mediadores pró-inflamatórios podem representar uma nova abordagem para muitas doenças. Citocinas, lipídios bioativos, os sistemas enzimáticos correspondentes e seus precursores específicos, juntamente com suas moléculas associadas, parecem estar no centro desse desequilíbrio entre eventos pró-inflamatórios e anti-inflamatórios. Com base nas evidências atuais, uma nova abordagem é sugerida na prevenção e tratamento de várias doenças e patologias crônicas com base na administração adequada de lipídios bioativos, ácidos araquidônico, eicosapentaenoico e docosahexaenóico e citocinas anti-inflamatórias, como IL-4 e IL- 10 e antioxidantes como glutationa, vitaminas C, B1, B6, B12 e outros cofatores necessários para restabelecer o equilíbrio entre os eventos pró-inflamatórios e anti-inflamatórios e restaurar a homeostase sistêmica.
