It is argued, on the one hand, that the diplomatic mediations of Tehuelche and Mapuche leaders were essential for the commission parties to be able to access regions over which the Argentine State did not exercise effective sovereignty, even in a context of increasing subalternization of local groups. At the same time, it is argued that indigenous people and criollos were the main work force among the commissioners, acting as baqueanos and contributingfundamental knowledge on topography, resources and traditional technologies. In turn, the commission staff was completed with internal and external migrants who actively participated in the definitions and practices of national sovereignty in frontier areas.
