In the introduction we describe the provenance of these documents and highlight some specific characteristics that distinguish these sources from others that contain information about military policy or include details of military activities. In the development of the work we point out the ways of inserting this material in our research work based on its analysis and the possibilities of approach that this material can provide to other investigations. En este artículo nos proponemos dar cuenta del interés por examinar la serie documental de libros de Órdenes Generales y del Cuerpo y Registro de altas, bajas y despachos, 1850 a 1890, ubicada en el Servicio Histórico del Ejército Nacional en la Argentina. En la introducción hacemos una descripción de la procedencia de estos documentos y destacamos algunas características específicas que distinguen a estas fuentes de otras que contienen información acerca de la política militar o incluyen detalles de actividades militares. En el desarrollo del trabajo señalamos los modos de inserción de ese material en nuestra investigación a partir de su análisis y las posibilidades de abordaje que puede brindar este material a otras indagaciones.
