The paper reviews some international historical experiences where these markets have been crucial for industrial development. For the Argentine case, we analyze the development of this market, the causes of its performance and the government’s role in that evolution, distinguishing the different stages within this period of industrialization of Argentina's economy. While these markets can play a significant role in financing the industry, the importance they have had in Argentina was variable, but in the whole they failed to become a general alternative for financing industrial enterprises. En este trabajo se aborda el estudio del mercado de valores durante el período denominado industrialización por sustitución de importaciones (ISI) en Argentina. En el artículo se repasan algunas experiencias históricas a nivel internacional en las que estos mercados han sido determinantes para el desarrollo industrial. Para el caso argentino, se analiza el desenvolvimiento de este mercado, las causas de su desempeño y el papel del Estado en ese devenir, diferenciando las distintas etapas dentro de este período de industrialización de la economía argentina. Si bien estos mercados pueden desempeñar un papel significativo para financiar la industria, la importancia que han tenido en la experiencia argentina fue variable, primando la escasa profundidad de estos ámbitos como alternativa para el financiamiento de las empresas industriales.
